EFRJ Executive Director Edit Torzs is invited to lead a discussion on 25 November after the performance Schuldfabrik by the artist Julain Hetzel in Gent.
The performance creates a pop-up shop in which consumers are invited to buy soap made of human fat and in doing so, relieve their ethical guilt and financial debt relative to that which exists between European wealth and excess and the third world. For each bar of soap purchased one is donated, along with the cash profits to African aid projects.
This provocative work raises questions about e.g. guilt, making amends and dealing with the past.
