RJ WEEK 2016: Potentials of storytelling
The International RESTORATIVE JUSTICE WEEK will take place on 20-27 November 2016. The EFRJ is organising a series of activities bringing together arts, justice and storytelling. These RJ WEEK 2016 will include activities not only for passively experiencing and ‘consuming’ stories, but also for sharing and creating them, such as a master class on theatre as a restorative tool, a cartoon workshop and a digital storytelling workshop. #RJWeek: follow us on social media!

Wauter Mannaert is a comic artist and trainer working for the Belgian Comic Strip Center in Brussels. Mannaert has a background in social work and he worked as an artist and trainer with different audiences (e.g. workshop on digital storytelling for refugees in Brussels).
Mannaert has been invited to provide the one-day training ‘How to tell a (restorative) cartoon story’ to discover and learn the techniques, the secrets and the art of storytelling using illustrations and comic strips, with or without dialogues and texts. The training will include a short presentation (on comic strip arts, its history, genres, etc.) and a practical workshop (synopsis, storyboard, pencil/ink drawing, colouring in).
This training is open to all: absolute beginners, amateurs, cartoon lovers, skilled artists. Each participant will work on a personal project based on a unique story, sketched by the end of the day in a short cartoon. The theme of the various stories will be inherent to restorative justice and common to the whole group of participants, although cartoons will be finalised according to individual styles and desired choices. Themes may include:
- A conflict situation and its peaceful resolution
- A victimization experience
- An offending experience
The training has different purposes: to provide participants an overview of the basic techniques used for drawing cartoons; to provide participants with a safe space for storytelling and sharing; to provide participants with the opportunity to actively engage in the raising awareness activities planned for the RJ WEEK 2016.
Concerning this last purpose of the training, the EFRJ may further use the stories and drawings collected during the training for awareness purposes (clearly, with the consent of participants). Depending on the outcomes of the workshop and consent of participants, the intention is to publish a digital booklet with all finalised cartoon projects on the EFRJ website and print some of the best cartoons as EFRJ postcards.
Please note that the cartoon training is limited for 10 participants. At the moment of registering, participants will be asked their main motivation to join this activity and a short story they would like to share and draw. The short story may be an anecdote, a personal belief, a reflection, an idea linked to restorative justice. On the day of the training, participants will be asked to sign an informed consent form allowing the EFRJ to use their cartoons for awareness purposes (anonymity can be granted).
