Course on RJ & Serious Crime

The EFRJ is organising an intensive Course in Tirana (Albania) on 12-13 June 2018 on the use of RJ in cases of serious crimes. The Course will occur just before the 10th international conference of the EFRJ entitled ‘Expanding the restorative imagination. Restorative justice between realities and visions in Europe and beyond‘. Download the programme of this training here.

A brief note

In 2017, the EFRJ experienced a successful Summer School (Como, 24-28 July 2017) and it started the organisation of its next big event, the international EFRJ Conference (Tirana, 14-16 June 2018). As many people were registered in the waiting list but could not join us in the Summer School in Como, the EFRJ is offering a pre-conference intensive Course on the same topic, RJ in serious crime.

As usual, our events bring together practitioners, researchers, trainers and other professionals interested in RJ from across Europe and beyond to exchange and discuss practices, ideas, challenges, and projects in the field of RJ. This Course is designed for RJ practitioners, who deal or plan to work with serious crime cases, but also open to others as explained below. The Course is offered as part of the conference package.

This Course will focus on RJ & Serious Crime, a relevant topic for the EFRJ’s agenda to ensure that every person in Europe will have the right of access to RJ services, in any criminal case and at any stage of the criminal procedures. It will include presentations and practical and interactive exercises focusing on the preparatory meetings, the facilitation of a RJ process and the supervision and support of RJ practitioners dealing with serious crimes. It will provide a safe and inspiring space for participants to gain additional knowledge and, where relevant, to practice advanced skills that will bring benefit to victims and offenders.

The group will have a maximum of 25 participants with an interest in RJ in serious crime from different professional backgrounds (e.g. mediators, victim support officers, criminal justice professionals, service managers, project coordinators, policymakers, researchers, trainers) coming from different countries in Europe and beyond. Participants are expected to have knowledge about RJ theories and/or practices and a good level of English.

The trainer will be Kristel Buntinx, who has worked since 17 years as a mediator for the RJ organization ‘Moderator’ (previously known as ‘Suggnomè’), a key organisational member of the EFRJ. Kristel is well-known for her expertise in facilitating dialogues in cases of serious crimes such as homicide, armed robbery and sexual violence. Moderator is recognised and funded by the government as the umbrella and forum organization for victim-offender mediation for adults in the Flemish part of Belgium.

Practical info

The venue is the same as for the EFRJ Conference, the historical Tirana International Hotel & Conference Centre, located at the heart of Tirana, facing the famous Scanderbeg Square.

Please note that this Course is an additional opportunity for participants of the Conference to engage in a practical exercises and we will offer seats as a full package only. Registration for the Course close on 15 April. As usual, EFRJ members will benefit of a special rate.
