A brief historical note on the EFRJ Summer School
Every two years, the EFRJ organises a Summer School in a different location in Europe and on a different theme. After the EFRJ’s foundation in 2000, the EFRJ Summer School was present in:

In general, the EFRJ Summer School aims at bringing together practitioners, researchers, trainers and other professionals interested in RJ from across Europe and beyond to exchange and discuss practices, ideas, challenges, projects in the field of RJ.
EFRJ Summer School 2017
The EFRJ is happy to invite you to participate in its 7th edition of the Summer School, organised in the cluster of St. Abbondio in Como (Italy) in partnership with the University of Insubria.
This year’s theme is ‘Restorative Justice in serious crime: Good quality standards and effective services’. The topic has been chosen because it is in line with the EFRJ’s agenda during the next years, namely to ensure that every person in Europe will have the right of access to RJ services, in any criminal case and at any stage of the criminal procedures.
The Summer School 2017 will provide a safe and inspiring space for participants to gain additional knowledge and, where relevant, to practice advanced skills that will bring benefit to victims and offenders.
The whole training will be held in English (but informal occasional translation can be provided in Italian/ French/ Spanish).

Audience
We are targeting an audience of about 30 RJ practitioners (e.g. mediators, facilitators, animators of RJ processes), researchers, project coordinators, policymakers, victim support officers, criminal justice professionals, trainers, service managers, and others with a particular interest in RJ in serious crime, from different countries in Europe and beyond. Participants are expected to have knowledge about RJ theories and/or practices, since the training will focus specifically on the application of RJ in cases of serious crimes.
We will shortlist candidates if we receive more than 30 applications. The main criteria for the selection are: experience, profession, and country representation. Please be aware that we will no longer accept applications if the desired number of 30 participants meeting the selection criteria is reached before the deadline (30 June).
Theme & Format
The emphasis of the Summer School 2017 will be on the use of RJ in serious cases which may be more complex and sensitive to deal with. This broad theme will focus on serious crimes which have an individual or collective dimension, such as homicides, sexual violence or political crimes.
The training will include frontal presentations, but it will mostly consist of practical workshops and interactive exercises focusing on:
- access to RJ for parties involved in serious crimes
- preparatory meetings for parties involved in serious crimes
- facilitation of a RJ process with parties involved in serious crimes
- training of RJ practitioners dealing with serious crimes
- dealing with values and feelings in relation to certain types of serious crimes
- supervision and support of RJ practitioners dealing with serious crimes
The training will also include a one-day community conference to exchange testimonies and local restorative practices with parties involved in political crimes.

Aims & Outcomes
During the Summer School 2017 trainers and participants will identify good practices to use RJ in cases of serious crimes. Such good practices will be in the field of access and actual initiation of RJ processes, as well as training and supervision of RJ practitioners dealing with serious crimes.
At the end of the Summer School 2017, participants will be more:
- resourceful, and be able to provide a coherent rationale of the benefits and risks of RJ to interested stakeholders, including in particular victims and offenders;
- resilient, and be able to make effective use of practice supervision so that they can support participants through the restorative process;
- restorative, having reviewed and revised key principles of knowledge and practice.
Venue
The Summer School 2017 will be hosted in the monastery of St. Abbondio in Como. Since it has been restored, this monastery hosts the Faculty of Law from the University of Insubria, our local partner in the organisation of this event. Indeed, this event is organised in partnership with the Centre for Restorative Justice and Mediation Studies of the University of Insubria. This centre was established on 6 October 2014 by Prof. Grazia Mannozzi and it is based at the University of Insubria. Its mission is to develop and promote RJ principles in a wide range of contexts: criminal, civil, commercial, family and community. To achieve this aim the Centre encourages research, carries out and promotes conferences, seminars, meetings, reading circles, summer schools and winter schools as well as training courses on RJ for non-profit organisations, associations, schools and universities. The deadline to register to the EFRJ Summer School 2017 is 15 June (Early-bird fee: 30 April). The EFRJ will review the applications received on a rolling basis in order to fill the 30 places available for this edition of the Summer School. More information here.

Accommodation: This year, the EFRJ arranged a common accommodation for all participants and trainers at Best Western Hotel Continental. This is included in the fee: please contact us if you do not need accommodation in Como.
Visa: Italy is part of the Schengen Area comprising 26 European countries. For non-Schengen EU, USA and Canadian citizens a valid passport is sufficient to enter Italy. Citizens of other countries should check whether visa is needed for them to enter Italy. For more information please visit this page. Please apply in due time for a visa if necessary and note that visa application takes 30-60 days and personal procedure is necessary.
On request, the EFRJ secretariat will issue invitation letters for visa applications, but only after registration to this Summer School is complete. Please note that registration is complete only after the full payment of the fee. Please contact us if you are entitled to an invitation letter.
