‘Realising Restorative Justice: Human Rights and Personal Realities’
(Leiden, 22-24 June 2016)

The conference will be hosted by the Law School of Leiden University, not so far from the city of The Hague where many international courts and human rights institutes are based. Themes will include children’s rights, victims’ and offenders’ rights, the refugee crisis and radicalization, focusing on how restorative justice may positively contribute to these issues. Feel free to disseminate the flyer of this conference!

 Themes

Human rights and restorative justice values and principles are closely linked. Interconnections are obvious in regard to the rights to dignity, respect and protection, the rights to recognition, inclusion and participation, the rights to freedom of speech, security and justice and the rights to personal growth and empowerment. One further important aspect is the question whether restorative justice should be promoted as a genuine civil, or human, right. Many international and European human rights instruments mention the importance of the use of restorative justice approaches in reaction to criminal offences (e.g. the European Convention on Human Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights). Additionally, restorative justice might take a more proactive role in addressing current human rights challenges, for example by contributing to the protection and empowerment of vulnerable groups, ensuring justice and security and encouraging a social dialogue around the current refugee issue, counteracting radicalization and extreme violence with alternative solutions, and even by using the arts and social media to share knowledge and promote diversity in our (digital and non-digital) world.

Field trips

An important part of the conference programme are the parallel field trips organised on the last day of the conference, Friday 24 June (starting from 14.30). Participants will choose one of the following organised field trips when completing the registration form to the conference:

• Visit at the Children’s Rights House and Defence for Children International (max. 50 people)
• Guided tour to visit International Wall Poems in Leiden (max. 60 people)

Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer the Prison Gate or the visit of the Peace Palace in The Hague as EFRJ field trips, as originally planned. We apologize for any inconveniences the change in field trip program may cause. However, if you are still planning to visit The Hague, the EFRJ will facilitate the trip. Interested participants can meet at the conference venue and travel together. Please note that this visit will be at the participant’s costs and there will be no guided tour. Call for papers

The programme is organized around six main themes. The EFRJ invited practitioners, researchers, legal professionals, policy makers and activists to submit proposals for presenting during the parallel workshop sessions. The call for papers closed on 26 April 2016. There is room also for poster presentations to be shown in the main hall where registrations and coffee breaks take place. Please send your proposal to Emanuela Biffi to reserve your spot!

The 9th international conference of the EFRJ will be hosted in the ‘Kamerlingh Onnes Building’ (see picture) of the Leiden Law School, one of the largest faculties of Leiden University. Conference dinner

The EFRJ is happy to announce that we will be able to offer a complimentary conference dinner to all participants at the restaurant Het Prentenkabinet in Leiden on Thursday, 23 June starting from 19.30! More info here (address: Kloksteeg 25, Leiden).

Please note that the registration for the dinner will be done on a ‘first come, first served’ basis since the restaurant has a maximum capacity of 200. Please click here to register before 15 June in order to reserve your seat for the Prentenkabinet dinner. Dietary requests can be mentioned in the registration form.

Please note that if you already paid for the dinner ticket (originally, the dinner contribution for participants of the EFRJ conference was 50 Euros), you will get the reimbursement after the conference.
