About 30 people participated to the event “Discussion for restorative justice” held in Ruse, Bulgaria on 21 November in occasion of the RJ Week 2014. The event has been organized by the Association “Bulgarian-Romanian Trans-border Mediation Institute” (BRTMI). The Manager of the Association BRTMI, Mr. Ivaylo Ivanov, kept us informed about the event:
“Discussion for restorative justice was held today in Ruse. The idea of the Association “Bulgarian-Romanian Trans-border Mediation Institute” (BRTMI) was supported by the Law Department of the University of Ruse “Angel Kanchev”. The event was part of Restorative Justice Week 2014, an initiative of the European Forum for Restorative Justice. The discussion was opened by the Manager of the Association BRTMI – Mr. Ivaylo Ivanov. Special guests of the discussion were the Vice Chancellor of the University – Prof. Dr. Juliana Popova and the Dean of the Law Department – Prof. Dr. Lachezar Dachev. The discussion was attended by law students, professors, lawyers and journalists.
Opportunities that currently exist in the Bulgarian legislation on the application of restorative justice in the criminal process were presented in front the audience. During the discussion actively participated mediators, working in the first registered in the Republic of Bulgaria Center for Restorative Justice for Children managed by the Association BRTMI. History, principles and practice of restorative justice were presented, as well as the civil society initiatives for legislative changes, enabling its wider application in Bulgaria. As a result of the event was increased the interest in restorative justice among the future jurists.”
